AJR51,,33Whereas, Intersex Awareness Day is recognized on October 26 in honor of the first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States at the annual conference of the American Academy of Pediatrics on October 26, 1996; and
AJR51,,44Whereas, “intersex” refers to individuals born with variations in their physical or biological sex characteristics, including genital anatomy, reproductive organs, hormonal variations, or chromosomal patterns; and
AJR51,,55Whereas, since the first Intersex Awareness Day in 1996, it has become a day during which intersex people and allies come together to celebrate and uplift the intersex community; and
AJR51,,66Whereas, approximately 1.7 percent of people are born with intersex traits; and
AJR51,,77Whereas, intersex people are often stigmatized and subjected to discrimination; and
AJR51,,88Whereas, intersex babies and children are often subject to unnecessary and involuntary surgeries at a young age to make their bodies conform to traditional notions of what it means to be male or female, although these interventions may result in lasting physical and mental harm; and
AJR51,,99Whereas, medical practices should respect the human rights and bodily autonomy of all people, and government institutions should implement policies that protect and support intersex people; and
AJR51,,1010Whereas, people born with intersex traits are an important part of the diversity of our state and should be afforded equal dignity and respect; now, therefore, be it
AJR51,,1111Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin Legislature does hereby recognize October 26, 2023, to be Intersex Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
