AJR133,,33Whereas, the National Kidney Foundation designated March as National Kidney Month to help spread awareness about kidney disease and the ways it can be detected and prevented; and
AJR133,,44Whereas, kidneys serve many important health functions, including filtering waste from the blood, directing the production of red blood cells, and regulating fluid and blood pressure levels; and
AJR133,,55Whereas, it is estimated that one in seven American adults has kidney disease and that one in three adults is at a high risk for developing kidney disease; and
AJR133,,66Whereas, kidney disease can cause several health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, kidney failure, and nerve damage; and
AJR133,,77Whereas, the risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, family history, high blood pressure, and old age; and
AJR133,,88Whereas, African Americans are at an increased risk for chronic kidney disease and kidney failure; and
AJR133,,99Whereas, nine out of 10 people who have kidney disease do not know they have it; and
AJR133,,1010Whereas, the symptoms of kidney disease may include swelling of the face, abdomen, or extremities; bloody or foamy urine; painful urination; fatigue; or increased thirst; and
AJR133,,1111Whereas, early detection and treatment of kidney disease can slow or prevent disease progression; and
AJR133,,1212Whereas, according to the National Kidney Foundation, kidney disease risk can be reduced by quitting smoking, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, and avoiding excessive use of pain medications; and
AJR133,,1313Whereas, the Wisconsin Legislature has an opportunity to join a national awareness effort to promote kidney health; now, therefore, be it
AJR133,,1414Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature hereby proclaims March 2024 to be Kidney Month in Wisconsin.
