Whereas, every year since 1963, National Police Week is observed in May along
4with Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, to honor law enforcement officers who
5have lost their lives while serving and protecting us; and

Whereas, law enforcement encompasses all of those individuals who help detect
7and prevent crime and enforce our laws; and

Whereas, law enforcement officers put their safety and lives at risk every day
9to selflessly serve and protect our communities from crime and threats; and

Whereas, unfortunately law enforcement officers are killed or harmed in the
11line of duty, with over 25,000 officers having been killed in the line of duty in United
12States' history, two officers being killed in Wisconsin in 2021, and almost 300 officers
13being killed in Wisconsin's history; and

Whereas, there are approximately 13,600 law enforcement officers serving in
15Wisconsin and almost 600 law enforcement agencies operating in the state; and

1Whereas, Law Enforcement Appreciation Month offers an opportunity to
2provide the recognition and support that law enforcement officers deserve for their
3selfless dedication and hard work protecting the citizens and communities of
4Wisconsin; and

Whereas, people are encouraged to show their support and appreciation of law
6enforcement by taking various actions, including by sending a card of support to their
7local police department, by sharing a positive law enforcement experience on social
8media, by participating in Project Blue Light through displaying a blue light outside
9of their house, and, most importantly, by thanking a police officer; and

Whereas, law enforcement holds an essential and valuable role in our society,
11by constantly and tirelessly protecting our people and communities; now, therefore,

assembly, the senate concurring, That May 2022 is
14recognized as Law Enforcement Appreciation Month in Wisconsin; and, be it further

15Resolved, That the members of the Assembly and Senate express their
16tremendous gratitude and support to all law enforcement officers in the state of
17Wisconsin and the nation for their sacrifices and selfless service in protecting our
18communities.
