AB230,1,2 1An Act to amend 66.0501 (1); and to create 165.85 (4) (a) 1m. of the statutes;
2relating to: citizenship requirements for local law enforcement officers.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, no person may be appointed to serve as a county deputy
sheriff or as a city, village, or town police officer unless the person is a citizen of the
United States. This bill repeals that citizenship requirement. The bill also prohibits
the Law Enforcement Standards Board from preventing a person from participating
in a law enforcement preparatory training program because the person is not a
citizen of the United States.
For further information see the state and local fiscal estimate, which will be
printed as an appendix to this bill.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB230,1 3Section 1. 66.0501 (1) of the statutes is amended to read:

5may be appointed deputy sheriff of any county or police officer for any city, village or
6town unless that person is a citizen of the United States.
This section does not apply
7to common carriers or to a deputy sheriff not required to take an oath of office.
AB230,2
1Section 2. 165.85 (4) (a) 1m. of the statutes is created to read:
