1An Act to amend 66.0501 (1); and
to create 165.85 (4) (a) 1m. of the statutes;
2relating to: citizenship requirements for local law enforcement officers.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, no person may be appointed to serve as a county deputy
sheriff or as a city, village, or town police officer unless the person is a citizen of the
United States. This bill repeals that citizenship requirement. The bill also prohibits
the Law Enforcement Standards Board from preventing a person from participating
in a law enforcement preparatory training program because the person is not a
citizen of the United States.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do

1. 66.0501 (1) of the statutes is amended to read:

(1) Deputy sheriffs and municipal police Applicability. No person
5may be appointed deputy sheriff of any county or police officer for any city, village or
6town unless that person is a citizen of the United States. This section does not apply
7to common carriers or to a deputy sheriff not required to take an oath of office.

4participation because the person is not a citizen of the United States.
