Whereas, each year, the Lupus Foundation of America designates May as
3National Lupus Awareness Month to show support for the two million Americans
4who have Lupus, including 28,000 of whom reside in the state of Wisconsin; and

Whereas, this mysterious, often misdiagnosed, and chronic autoimmune
6disease can be deadly, as inflammation attacks virtually any organ in the body,
7including the skin, heart, lungs, brain, kidneys, and joints; and

Whereas, the average time to diagnose a patient with lupus is between four to
9seven years, thereby allowing this disease to progress and delaying appropriate
10treatment; and

Whereas, those who are diagnosed are usually between the ages of 15 to 44,
12with 90 percent being female and 15 percent being children, and the disease is
13two-to-three times more prevalent in women of color; and

1Whereas, the Lupus Foundation of America, Wisconsin Chapter, works
2tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for research, education, advocacy, and
3support for lupus patients, their families, and those who care for them; now,

senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
6Legislature recognizes the month of May 2019 as National Lupus Awareness Month.
