1Relating to: declaring May 2025 as Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobility
2Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month. SJR39,1,63Whereas, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of 13 inherited 4connective tissue disorders that together affect 1 in 5,000 people. Each type of EDS 5has its own set of symptoms, but some features are seen across all types of EDS, 6including overly flexible joints, hyperextensible skin, and fragile body tissues; and SJR39,1,97Whereas, hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) are inherited connective 8tissue disorders similar to EDS that cause overly flexible and unstable joints, 9injury, and pain; and SJR39,1,1210Whereas, persons with EDS and HSD often have fatigue, headaches, 11gastrointestinal problems, abnormal blood pressure and heart rate, and other 12symptoms that interfere with function and quality of life; and SJR39,2,213Whereas, there is no cure for any type of EDS or HSD. The conditions are 14managed by addressing a person’s symptoms. EDS and HSD can cause a variety of
1symptoms in many different areas of the body, so people with these conditions may 2require multiple providers in different specialties to manage their care; and SJR39,2,63Whereas, access to professionals who are knowledgeable about EDS and HSD 4is limited in Wisconsin. Lack of awareness about EDS and HSD in Wisconsin and 5across the world stands in the way of the diagnosis, management, and research of 6these conditions; and SJR39,2,97Whereas, awareness of EDS and HSD by both medical professionals and the 8general public can help improve the lives of people living with EDS and HSD in 9Wisconsin; now, therefore, be it SJR39,2,1210Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That Wisconsin hereby 11declares May 2025 as Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobility Spectrum 12Disorders Awareness Month and encourages its citizens to observe the same.
