AJR80,1,63Whereas, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s 4disease, is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease in which a person’s 5brain loses connection with their muscles, slowly reducing their ability to walk, 6talk, eat, and eventually breathe; and AJR80,1,77Whereas, thousands of new ALS cases are reported every year; and AJR80,1,98Whereas, every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS and someone 9passes away from ALS; and AJR80,1,1110Whereas, patients diagnosed with ALS survive on average only two to five 11years from the time of diagnosis; and AJR80,1,1312Whereas, ALS can affect anyone but is more likely to develop in men, people 13between the ages of 55 and 75, and people who have served in the military; and AJR80,2,2
1Whereas, the exact causes of ALS remain unknown, and there is no known 2means to prevent or cure the disease; and AJR80,2,43Whereas, securing access to new therapies, durable medical equipment, and 4communication technologies is of vital importance to people living with ALS; and AJR80,2,75Whereas, clinical trials play a pivotal role in evaluating new treatments, 6enhancing quality of life, and fostering assistive technologies for those living with 7ALS; and AJR80,2,108Whereas, philanthropic organizations provide funds that allow for global 9research of ALS and support specific research projects across the United States and 10other countries; and AJR80,2,1311Whereas, philanthropic organizations are committed to accelerating the pace 12of discovery, fueled by the hope that one day ALS will be a livable disease for 13everyone, everywhere, until a cure can be found; now, therefore, be it AJR80,2,1914Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin 15Legislature hereby declares May 2025 and May 2026 as Amyotrophic Lateral 16Sclerosis Awareness Months, recognizes these months as an opportunity to increase 17public awareness of the dire circumstances of people living with ALS, acknowledges 18the terrible impact this disease has on those individuals and their families, and 19supports research to eradicate this disease.
