AJR35,1,42Whereas, Norway, which means “Northern Way,” is the sixth-largest country 3in Europe, covering 148,715 square miles, and has a population of more than 5 4million people; and AJR35,1,65Whereas, Norwegian immigrants have made countless contributions to the 6culture of Wisconsin and other regions of the United States; and AJR35,1,77Whereas, one out of every 12 Wisconsinites claims Norwegian ancestry; and AJR35,1,108Whereas, “Syttende Mai,” Norwegian for “May 17,” celebrates the 9anniversary of the 1814 signing of the Norwegian Constitution, which declared 10Norway’s independence from Denmark; and AJR35,1,1211Whereas, the Norwegian Constitution is the third-oldest in the world, 12predated only by the constitutions of the United States and France; and AJR35,2,213Whereas, Norwegian culture can be found throughout Wisconsin in the
1cuisine of lutefisk and lefse, in the art of rosemaling, and in the presence of carved 2wooden trolls; and AJR35,2,73Whereas, Wisconsin communities such as Westby, Stoughton, Blair, Mount 4Horeb, and Woodville will celebrate Syttende Mai in many ways, including parades, 5Norwegian displays, Norwegian street music and dancers, Syttende Mai King and 6Queen presentations, Syttende Mai runs, special museum tours, choral concerts, 7church services, and Norwegian drama; and AJR35,2,98Whereas, thousands of Wisconsin residents of Norwegian heritage will 9participate in these activities during the month of May; now, therefore, be it AJR35,2,1410Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin 11Legislature proclaims the weekend of May 16, 17, and 18, 2025, Syttende Mai 12Weekend in the state of Wisconsin and declares that all residents of this state are 13honorary Norwegians for that weekend and urged to observe the Syttende Mai 14Weekend with appropriate celebrations.
