This bill provides for a semester of full undergraduate tuition remission to resident undergraduate students enrolled in a teaching program at a University of Wisconsin System institution during the student’s semester of student teaching.

AB997,,44The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:
AB997,15Section 1. 20.285 (1) (em) of the statutes is created to read:
AB997,,6620.285 (1) (em) Student teacher tuition remission. A sum sufficient to reimburse the University of Wisconsin System for student teacher tuition remissions under s. 36.27 (3q).
AB997,27Section 2. 36.27 (3q) of the statutes is created to read:
AB997,,8836.27 (3q) Tuition remission for student teachers. (a) In this subsection, “student teacher” means an individual enrolled as a resident undergraduate student in the system who is participating in the student teaching component of a teacher preparatory program in this state approved by the state superintendent of public instruction under s. 115.28 (7) (a).
AB997,,99(b) The board shall grant full remission of resident undergraduate tuition to student teachers during their semester of student teaching.
AB997,,1010(c) The cost to the system of remissions under this subsection shall be paid from the appropriation account under s. 20.285 (1) (em).
AB997,311Section 3. Initial applicability.
AB997,,1212(1) This act first applies to individuals who commence student teaching in the first semester that begins after the effective date of this subsection.
AB997,413Section 4. Effective date.
AB997,,1414(1) This act takes effect on the first day of the 3rd month beginning after publication, or on the first day of the 3rd month beginning after publication of the 2023 biennial budget act, whichever is later.
