Announcements, Adjournment Honors, and Remarks Under Special Privilege
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of every single person who has supported his family consistently throughout the last eight months while his daughter Kathleen has been fighting colon cancer. While the fight continues, the positive encouragement to him and his entire family helps to confirm that God has got this. Through so many interactions with others, we have received encouragement to be faithful and not give up.
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Captain Robert Ira Bush of Racine on his birthday of June 8, 1938 and his date of death of June 9, 1966, as he was flying a mission in his Douglas Sky Raider Aircraft over North Vietnam. Captain Bush is my personal “MIA.” Senator Wanggaard chose to honor Captain Bush in remembering the sacrifice so many made for our freedom.
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of those who sacrificed their lives on June 6, 1944, the beginning of the end of World War II at “D” Day.
Senator Pfaff, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Prairie du Chien’s 350th Expedition Anniversary happening June 16th-18th. The festival will commemorate the 1673 expedition of Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet that explored the Mississippi River and visited the area that is now Prairie du Chien. Native Americans had been traveling on and using the Mississippi River for thousands of years prior, but this expedition confirmed for the French that it was possible to travel by water from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.
Senator Testin, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Lily Joyce, a Junior at Tomah High School. Lily was chosen to be a part of the Senate Scholar program earlier this year, and today she’s come back to help work the floor. She’s joined by five other Senate Scholars today, who Senator Testin would like to adjourn in honor of as well.
Senator Agard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Juan José López, an esteemed member of our community here in Dane County. He lost a battle with long term health illnesses just this week. He was a native of Texas, came here for our esteemed University System, received his degree from the University of Wisconsin and decided to make Madison and Wisconsin home. Many of you may have crossed his path as he always did walks around the Capitol square and up and down State Street. He was an ambassador and enjoyed asking people their stories and sharing his stories with them on his walks. He was the first Latino to serve on the Madison school board. He served 12 years from 1994 to 2006. He was the cofounder of the Latino Professionals Association of Greater Madison. He served on the United Migrant Opportunity Service in Milwaukee. He served with Nuestro Mundo Opportunity Services, One City Schools, Rotary Foundation, and the Latino Chamber of Commerce. He did also work for Briarpatch Services for homeless and runaway youth in our communities as well as for the Boys and Girls Club. He was also a Section Chief here for the State of Wisconsin at the Department of Workforce Development in employee training. Juan retired from the state in 2019. He has a lot of people within our community that are adopted family for him. He has a legacy that if we all had, we’d be very proud of. Senator Agard hoped we can take a moment to honor the life that he lived and the gifts he gave to everyone here in Madison, Dane County and the State of Wisconsin.
Senator Spreitzer, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Officer Aaron Johnson of the Evansville Police Department, who was also honored today as a Hometown Hero by the Wisconsin State Assembly. Officer Johnson effectively administered a double dose of Narcan in November 2022, saving the life of a 30 year old mother. Officer Johnson’s reliable and attentive work led him to recently receive the Evansville Police Department’s “Life Saving Award.” We join the State Assembly in commending and congratulating Officer Aaron Johnson’s selfless service and dedication to the City of Evansville.
