Whereas, the National Eating Disorders Association's “National Eating
4Disorders Awareness Week" is the largest and best-known eating disorders outreach
5effort in the country; and

Whereas, this week shines a spotlight on eating disorders by educating the
7public, spreading a message of hope, and putting life-saving resources into the
8hands of those in need; and

Whereas, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness
10and approximately 30 million Americans struggle at some point in their lives with
11an eating disorder; and

Whereas, these disorders affect people across all backgrounds and include
13anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorders; and

Whereas, the 2021 theme is “Every Body Has a Seat at the Table"; and

1Whereas, this theme invites inclusivity in the greater eating disorder
2community and sends a message to individuals at all stages of body acceptance that
3their eating disorder recovery issues are valid; and

Whereas, signs and symptoms of eating disorders are often overlooked, and
5many individuals, families, and communities are unaware of the devastating mental
6and physical consequences of eating disorders, as well as the pressures, attitudes,
7and behaviors that shape them; and

Whereas, many cases of eating disorders go undetected, and less than
9one-third of youths with eating disorders receive treatment; and

Whereas, eating disorder experts have found that prompt, intensive treatment
11significantly improves the chances of recovery; and

Whereas, the Wisconsin State Assembly recognizes that “National Eating
13Disorders Awareness Week" highlights the importance of screenings for early
14detection and intervention of eating disorders, dispels myths, and presents eating
15disorders as a public health issue with close connections to substance abuse, obesity,
16trauma, and other mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and
17obsessive-compulsive disorder; now, therefore, be it

assembly, That the Wisconsin State Assembly recognizes the
19week of February 22 to 28, 2021, as “Eating Disorders Awareness Week" in Wisconsin
20in conjunction with the observance of “National Eating Disorders Awareness Week."
