SJR97,1,32 Whereas, Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April
322 to demonstrate support for environmental protection; and
SJR97,1,74 Whereas, Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin
5who in September 1969 called for a national teach-in on the environment to send a
6message to Washington that public opinion was solidly behind a bold political agenda
7on environmental problems; and
SJR97,1,108 Whereas, in 1970, the first Earth Day motivated millions of Americans
9organized together and independently to advocate for a diverse array of climate
10challenges; and
SJR97,1,1411 Whereas, Gaylord Nelson's leadership went on to produce the Environmental
12Decade which ushered in the support of environmental legislation such as the
13National Environmental Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act, and stringent
14amendments to strengthen the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts; and
