TONY EVERS
Governor
_____________
State of Wisconsin
Offices of the Senate President and Assembly Speaker
November 28, 2023
Dear Governor Evers:
The Marquette Law School Poll shows Wisconsinites hold an overall negative view of our economy, with 62 percent of respondents saying they are just getting by or struggling to get by. Since Joe Biden has taken office, federal spending programs have had a huge negative impact on family budgets, as inflation rose 8% last year and rates this year are still higher than we’ve seen in any other time in the last decade. Many of your decisions to allocate ARPA funds have grown government, exacerbating the problem. When the federal funds run out, many of these new programs will likely seek continuance via state funding, potentially stressing the taxpayer even further.
During this session we have made important investments in housing, share revenue, and improvements to our education system. Unfortunately, your veto of substantial tax cuts has disappointed many Wisconsinites. As your anticipate delivering your State of the State Address in January, we hope you will consider ways that we can continue to work together to improve our economy that do not require massive government spending and also seek to return the bulk of our surplus back to the people who overpaid it.
To that end, it is our honor to invite you to deliver the State of the State address to a joint session of the Wisconsin State Legislature in the Assembly chambers. We invite you to join us on either January 16 or January 23, 2024. Please let us know what date works best for you.
We look forward to hearing the address and to working together to shape an even better future for our state and its citizens.
Sincerely,
CHRIS KAPENGA
Senate President
ROBIN VOS
Assembly Speaker
