Senator Wirch, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of John Maurer, who passed away on March 31. Born in Kenosha, John lived a full life.  He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and commanded a B24 “Liberator” as part of the 15th Air Force.  After the war, John attended Marquette University before becoming a pilot with United Airlines. John then devoted his life to public service, becoming Pleasant Prairie Town Chairman before being elected to the State Senate from the 22nd Senate District.  During his time in the Senate, John was known for his knowledge of the state budget and his ability to work across party lines and served as Vice Chair of the Joint Finance Committee.  In May 1985, John was appointed Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs and served under both Democratic and Republicans Governors.  He was a fierce advocate for our state’s veterans; he was instrumental in creating the state Veterans Museum in Madison, and Maurer Hall at the Veterans Home at Union Grove is named after him. John was an avid golfer and had a great sense of humor.  He is survived by his wife, Arlene; his daughter, Lisa (Patrick) Wells and son, Thomas Maurer; and his grandchildren, Noah, John and Levi. John was a major figure in the Kenosha community and was respected and admired by many. He will be missed.
