SJR60,1,73Whereas, the U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that the right to bear arms 4under the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is not unlimited and allows 5for reasonable restrictions on firearms, including who can have firearms and under 6what conditions, where firearms can be carried, and what types of firearms are 7permissible; and SJR60,1,98Whereas, firearms have become the number one cause of death for children in 9the United States and Wisconsin; and SJR60,1,1210Whereas, on average, every day in the United States, approximately 327 11people are injured or killed with guns in murders, assaults, suicides, and accidents; 12and SJR60,2,213Whereas, in Wisconsin, approximately 741 men, women, and children are
1killed with guns each year, 64 percent of whom die as a result of suicide by firearm; 2and SJR60,2,33Whereas, in Wisconsin, over 1,500 people are wounded each year by guns; and SJR60,2,54Whereas, gun deaths devastate families in urban, rural, and suburban areas; 5and SJR60,2,86Whereas, while Wisconsin's urban areas are disproportionately affected by 7gun homicide, the state's less populated areas experience greater rates of gun 8suicide; and SJR60,2,109Whereas, gun violence costs our country $557.2 billion in combined direct and 10indirect expenses annually; and SJR60,2,1211Whereas, studies show that gun safety laws save lives and are associated with 12lower firearm death rates; and SJR60,2,1413Whereas, Wisconsin has a long tradition of responsible gun ownership, safe 14gun usage, and training to hunt with firearms; now, therefore, be it SJR60,2,1615Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature 16hereby proclaims June 6, 2025, as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
