AJR19,1,42Whereas, Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April
322 to demonstrate support for environmental conservation while recognizing the
4protection of our land, water, and air; and
AJR19,1,75Whereas, Earth Day was founded by the U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of
6Wisconsin, who called for a national teach-in on the crisis of the environment to
7be held on April 22, 1970; and
AJR19,1,108Whereas, Senator Nelson aimed to send a message to Washington, DC, from
9people across the nation that public opinion called for clean water and air and the
10protection of our environment; and
AJR19,1,1311Whereas, the first Earth Day motivated 20 million Americans, including 2,000
12colleges, to organize together to advocate for a diverse array of solutions to climate
13challenges; and
AJR19,2,414Whereas, Senator Nelsons leadership and the impacts of the first Earth Day

1went on to produce the Environmental Decade, which ushered in the support of
2environmental legislation such as the National Environmental Policy Act, the
3Endangered Species Act, and stringent amendments to strengthen the Clean Air
4and Clean Water Acts; and
AJR19,2,75Whereas, Earth Day is now celebrated in 193 countries around the world,
6creating opportunities for civic engagement and community collaboration to leave a
7more prosperous natural environment for generations to come; and
AJR19,2,118Whereas, April 22, 2025, is the 55th anniversary of Earth Day and events will
9take place across Wisconsin and worldwide to encourage actions on behalf of our
10planet to safeguard our natural resources and protect our environment; now,
11therefore, be it
AJR19,2,1512Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of
13the Wisconsin Legislature honor April 22, 2025, as the 55th anniversary of Earth
14Day and encourage Wisconsinites to continue actions to preserve our environment
15for all to enjoy.
