2veterans who have served our state and country.
SJR74,1,53 Whereas, Veterans Day is a federally recognized holiday observed on November
411, 2021, that pays tribute to all American veterans who have honorably served our
5country; and
SJR74,1,86 Whereas, Veterans Day is observed every year on November 11 in remembrance
7of the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918 when World
8War I came to an end; and
SJR74,1,119 Whereas, Veterans Day was originally established as Armistice Day on
10November 11, 1919, to commemorate the first anniversary of the end of World War
11I; and
SJR74,1,1512 Whereas, Congress passed a resolution in 1926, stating that the anniversary
13of Armistice Day on November 11 “should be commemorated with thanksgiving and
14prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual
15understanding between nations”; and

1Whereas, Congress established Armistice Day as a national holiday in 1938 and
2in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday
3to Veterans Day in recognition of all veterans who have served in all wars; and
SJR74,2,54 Whereas, Veterans Day commemorates all veterans, living or dead, who have
5served the United States in times of war and in peace; and
SJR74,2,86 Whereas, there are over 18 million living veterans in the United States today
7who have served in at least one war, including 325,000 veterans who served in World
8War II; and
SJR74,2,109 Whereas, there are estimated to be over 371,000 veterans living in Wisconsin
10today; and
SJR74,2,1311 Whereas, over 41 million Americans have served and fought for our country
12since its founding, including more than 16 million Americans who served in World
13War II, the largest mobilization of the U.S. military in our nation's history; and
SJR74,2,1614 Whereas, we honor all of those individuals who have bravely and honorably
15served our country today and throughout our nation's history for their sacrifices and
16dedication to protecting and serving our great nation; now, therefore, be it
SJR74,2,20 17Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
18Wisconsin Legislature recognize November 11, 2021, as Veterans Day and pay
19tribute to the millions of veterans who have honorably and bravely served the United
20States over the course of our nation's history.
