Whereas, each year, thousands of individuals and families in Wisconsin bear
4the physical, mental, and economic costs of violence; and

Whereas, violence takes many forms, including community violence, domestic
6and intimate partner violence, sexual violence and human trafficking, child
7maltreatment and exploitation, drug-related violence, and suicide; and

Whereas, violence is a leading cause of injury, disability, and premature death,
9and merely witnessing violent incidents can result in psychological disorders, such
10as depression, anxiety, and stress; and

Whereas, violence perpetuates cycles of trauma that echo across generations
12and discourages economic development in affected areas, thereby negatively
13impacting the accessibility of jobs, healthy food, and safe housing such that the
14Institute for Economics & Peace estimates that the direct and indirect cost of violence
15to the U.S. economy is $1.4 trillion per year; and

1Whereas, preventing violence requires each and every one of us working
2together to promote the preservation of life; and

Whereas, prevention of violence before it occurs, as well as intervention efforts
4after violence has occurred, reduce its impact and prevent future perpetration and

Whereas, violence is preventable, and its impacts can be reduced with violence
7prevention strategies and increased awareness of important issues such as
8victimization, trauma and adverse childhood experiences, restorative justice,
9mentoring, and access to resources that help create safer and more resilient

Whereas, we recognize Violence Prevention Month to promote nonviolence in
15the state of Wisconsin and urge all Wisconsin residents to join in the effort to reduce
