SB1062,1,3 1An Act to amend 119.04 (1); and to create 20.255 (2) (e) and 118.237 of the
2statutes; relating to: grants to school districts to pay student teachers an
3hourly wage, granting rule-making authority, and making an appropriation.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, this bill requires a school board to pay
each student teacher who student teaches in the school district an hourly wage of at
least $15 per hour. The bill also requires the Department of Public Instruction to
reimburse school boards for the cost of paying student teachers an hourly wage of $15
per hour. Under the bill, annually on the 3rd Monday in June, DPI must provide aid
to school boards in an amount equal to $15 times the total number of hours student
teachers student taught in the school district during the preceding school term.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

6under s. 118.237 to pay student teachers an hourly wage.

SB1062,2,2 2118.237 Student teachers; compensation. (1) In this section:
SB1062,2,63 (a) “Institution of higher education” means a postsecondary institution located
4in this state that provides an educational program for which it awards a bachelor's
5or higher degree and that is listed in the U.S. department of education's database of
6accredited postsecondary institutions and programs.
SB1062,2,97 (b) “Student teacher” means an individual enrolled in an institution of higher
8education who is participating in the student teaching component of a teacher
9preparatory program approved under s. 115.28 (7) (a).
SB1062,2,14 10(2) Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, a school board shall pay a student
11teacher who is participating in the student teaching component of a teacher
12preparatory program at a school in the school district an hourly wage of at least $15
13for the hours the student teacher participates in the student teaching component in
14the school district.
SB1062,2,23 15(3) Annually on the 3rd Monday of June, for each student teacher who
16participated in the student teaching component of a teacher preparatory program in
17a school district during the preceding school term, the department shall pay the
18school board of the school district an amount determined by multiplying $15 times
19the number of hours the student teacher participated in the student teaching
20component of the teacher preparatory program in the school district during the
21preceding school term, as reported to the department by the school board. The
22department shall make payments under this subsection from the appropriation
23under s. 20.255 (2) (e).
