AJR55,1,2 Relating to: proclaiming June 4, 2021, as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Wisconsin.

AJR55,1,4 Whereas, every day in the United States, approximately 300 people are injured or killed with guns in murders, assaults, suicides, and accidents; and

AJR55,1,7 Whereas, in Wisconsin, approximately 600 men, women, and children are killed with guns each year, including the 70 percent who die as a result of suicide; and

AJR55,1,9 Whereas, in Wisconsin, there are over 1,000 people each year wounded by guns; and

AJR55,1,12 Whereas, gun deaths devastate families in urban, rural, and suburban areas, while Wisconsin's urban areas are disproportionately impacted by homicides and the state's less populated areas experience greater rates of gun suicide; and

AJR55,1,14 Whereas, gun violence costs our country $229 billion in combined direct and indirect expenses annually; and

AJR55,2,2 Whereas, studies show that gun safety laws save lives and are associated with lower firearm death rates; and

AJR55,2,6 Whereas, the U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that the Second Amendment allows for reasonable restrictions on firearms, including who can have them and under what conditions, where they can be carried, and what types of firearms are permissible; now, therefore, be it

AJR55,2,8 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature hereby proclaims June 4, 2021, as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
