AJR40,1,1 Relating to: proclaiming April as Hmong Heritage Month in Wisconsin.

AJR40,1,3 Whereas, Hmong forces fought for and with U.S. armed forces during the Vietnam War; and

AJR40,1,5 Whereas, the Hmong people faced danger and persecution following the Vietnam War; and

AJR40,1,7 Whereas, the United States is now home to a sizable Hmong community, which took root as Hmong veterans and refugees sought asylum; and

AJR40,1,10 Whereas, the Hmong people brought with them a rich culture with millennia of heritage, including distinct language, music, art, dance, cuisine, traditions, and more; and

AJR40,1,12 Whereas, the third-largest population of Hmong people in the United States lives in Wisconsin; and

AJR40,1,14 Whereas, Hmong Americans have lived, worked, and raised families in Wisconsin for nearly 50 years; and

AJR40,2,3 Whereas, the Hmong people continue to overcome discrimination, linguistic and cultural barriers, and economic hardship as they play integral roles in education, industry, agriculture, public service, culture, and many other areas; and

AJR40,2,6 Whereas, Hmong entrepreneurs operate businesses throughout Wisconsin, creating jobs, stimulating the economy, and providing products and services to Wisconsin communities; and

AJR40,2,8 Whereas, Hmong Wisconsinites embrace the importance of family, history, and community as they preserve and teach others about their cultural traditions; and

AJR40,2,11 Whereas, Hmong community organizations have provided valuable and culturally sensitive aid and resources to those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic; and

AJR40,2,13 Whereas, the Hmong community and culture are an invaluable part of the multicultural diversity of the state; and

AJR40,2,15 Whereas, Hmong Heritage Month has been celebrated with events in April every year since 2004; and

AJR40,2,19 Whereas, in a time of heightened violence and prejudice against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, it is especially important to recognize and celebrate the value and contributions of members of that community; now, therefore, be it

AJR40,2,23 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin Legislature hereby proclaims April as Hmong Heritage Month in the state of Wisconsin and officially commends the Hmong community for its contributions to the United States and to the state of Wisconsin.
