1An Act to renumber 84.1036 (1);
to amend 84.1036 (title) and 84.1036 (2); and
2to create 84.1036 (1) (b) of the statutes;
relating to: designating the Richard
3I. Bong Memorial Bridge.

This bill directs the Department of Transportation to designate and, upon
receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, mark the bridge on USH
2 across the St. Louis River between the city of Superior in Douglas County and the
city of Duluth in the state of Minnesota as the “Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge.”
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

3. 84.1036 (1) (b) of the statutes is created to read:

(1) (b) The department shall designate and, subject to sub. (2), mark
9the bridge on USH 2 across the St. Louis River between the city of Superior in
1Douglas County and the city of Duluth in the state of Minnesota as the “Richard I.
2Bong Memorial Bridge" in recognition and appreciation of the many military
3accomplishments during World War II of Major Richard I. Bong who was born in the
4city of Superior in Douglas County, received 26 decorations, including the
5Congressional Medal of Honor, and is widely known as “America's Ace of Aces.”

4. 84.1036 (2) of the statutes is amended to read:

(2) Upon receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties,
8including any county, city, village, or town, to cover the costs of erecting and
9maintaining markers along the route specified in sub. (1)
(a) to clearly identify to
10motorists the designation of the route as the “Major Richard I. Bong Memorial
11Highway," the department shall erect and maintain the markers.
Upon receipt of
12sufficient contributions from interested parties, including any county, city, village,
13or town, to cover the costs of erecting and maintaining markers at the bridge
14specified in sub. (1) (b) to clearly identify to motorists the designation of the bridge
15as the “Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge," the department shall erect and maintain
16the markers. No state funds, other than from the receipt of contributions under this
17subsection, may be expended for the erection or maintenance of the markers.
