Whereas, Transgender Day of Remembrance, which occurs annually on
4November 20, is a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of
5transphobia and to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the
6transgender community; and

Whereas, Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1999 by
8Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a transgender woman, to memorialize the murder of
9transgender woman Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts; and

Whereas, since its inception, Transgender Day of Remembrance has been held
11annually on November 20, and it has slowly evolved from the web-based project
12started by Smith into an international day of action; and

Whereas, Transgender Day of Remembrance has been observed in over 185
14cities throughout more than 20 countries; and

1Whereas, Transgender Day of Remembrance memorials traditionally include
2a reading of the names of those who lost their lives during the previous year, and may
3include other actions, such as candlelight vigils and marches; now, therefore, be it

assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
5Legislature does hereby recognize and proclaim November 20, 2019, to be
6Wisconsin's Transgender Day of Remembrance.
