AJR59,1,32 Whereas, over 160,000 American, British, and Canadian troops landed across
350 miles of Normandy beaches in the early hours of June 6, 1944; and
AJR59,1,64 Whereas, Wisconsinites joined their fellow Americans and Allied troops to
5brave bullets and shellfire as they waded ashore through freezing water or
6parachuted from planes to land behind enemy lines; and
AJR59,1,97 Whereas, D-Day, codenamed “Operation Neptune,” constituted the largest
8amphibious attack in history, and became a major turning point of World War II in
9Europe; and
AJR59,1,1210 Whereas, the “Great Crusade,” as General Dwight D. Eisenhower called it,
11claimed the lives of 10,000 Allied men on June 6 alone, including over 6,000
12Americans; and

1Whereas, the Battle of Normandy, codenamed “Operation Overlord,” concluded
2in late August 1944 when Allied forces liberated France and forced a Nazi retreat;

AJR59,2,44 Whereas, around 8,000 World War II veterans live in Wisconsin today; and
AJR59,2,75 Whereas, these veterans' experiences must be preserved and shared in order
6to remember and honor their sacrifices for the sake of our country; now, therefore,

9Wisconsin Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day and
10honor those fallen, as well as those who survived to share their stories.
