2MDS Awareness Week in Wisconsin.
AJR144,1,33 Whereas, aplastic anemia is a rare but extremely serious blood disorder; and
AJR144,1,54 Whereas, aplastic anemia occurs when bone marrow cannot produce the
5amount of blood cells necessary for normal body functioning; and
AJR144,1,76 Whereas, people with aplastic anemia have an increased risk for
7life-threatening infections and bleeding; and
AJR144,1,108 Whereas, the Aplastic Anemia and Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS)
9International Foundation estimates that between 600 and 900 people are diagnosed
10with aplastic anemia each year in the United States; and
AJR144,1,1411 Whereas, the only cure for aplastic anemia is a bone marrow transplant;
12however, the success of the transplant depends on the stage of the disease, the
13patient's age and general health, and how well the donor's tissue type matches the
14patient; and

1Whereas, another treatment option for aplastic anemia is immunosuppressive
2therapy; however, approximately one-third of patients do not respond to
3immunosuppressive drugs; and
AJR144,2,64 Whereas, the five-year survival rate for patients who receive treatment for
5aplastic anemia is approximately 40 percent for those under age 20, 30 percent for
6those 20 to 40 years old, and 10 percent for those over age 40; and
AJR144,2,97 Whereas, severe aplastic anemia without a bone marrow transplant or
8response to immunosuppressive therapy has a two-year fatality rate of 70 percent;
9and
AJR144,2,1310 Whereas, it is important to increase awareness around aplastic anemia and the
11similar blood disorder MDS, which occurs when bone marrow cells do not develop
12into mature blood cells, to facilitate the battle against these debilitating bone
13marrow diseases; and
AJR144,2,1514 Whereas, March 1, 2020, to March 6, 2020, is recognized as National Aplastic
15Anemia and MDS Awareness Week; now, therefore, be it
AJR144,2,18 16Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
17Wisconsin Legislature recognize March 1, 2020, to March 6, 2020, as Aplastic
18Anemia and MDS Awareness Week.
