AJR141,1,1 Relating to: honoring April 22, 2020, as the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day.

AJR141,1,3 Whereas, Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection; and

AJR141,1,7 Whereas, Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin who in September 1969 called for a national teach-in on the environment to send a message to Washington that public opinion was solidly behind a bold political agenda on environmental problems; and

AJR141,1,10 Whereas, in 1970, the first Earth Day motivated millions of Americans organized together and independently to advocate for a diverse array of climate challenges; and

AJR141,1,14 Whereas, Gaylord Nelson's leadership went on to produce the Environmental Decade which ushered in the support of environmental legislation such as the National Environmental Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act, and stringent amendments to strengthen the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts; and

AJR141,2,3 Whereas, this year will be the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day with events taking place worldwide to encourage action in behalf of our planet; now, therefore, be it

AJR141,2,5 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin Legislature honors April 22, 2020, as the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day.
