1An Act to create 20.255 (2) (en) and 121.42 of the statutes;
relating to: aid for
2driver education courses, granting rule-making authority, and making an
3appropriation.

This bill requires the Department of Public Instruction to reimburse school
districts, operators of independent charter schools, and private schools participating
in parental choice programs for providing a driver education course to pupils who are
least 16 years old and have at least a 2.3 grade point average. For purposes of
reimbursing a private school participating in a parental choice program, the bill
requires DPI to reimburse the private school only for those pupils who meet the
criteria and are attending the private school under the parental choice program.

2121.42 Driver education; aid.
(1) Beginning in the 2020-21 school year, if
3a school board, the operator of a charter school established under s. 118.40 (2r) or
4(2x), or the governing body of a private school participating in a program under s.
5118.60 or 119.23 offers a driver education course approved by the state
6superintendent under s. 115.28 (11), the department shall reimburse the school
7board, operator of the charter school, or governing body of the private school for the
8cost to provide the driver education course to pupils who satisfy all of the following
9criteria:

(a) The pupil is at least 16 years of age.

(b) The pupil has at least a 2.3 grade point average or the equivalent.

(c) If the driver education course is provided by the governing body of a private
13school, the pupil is attending the private school under s. 118.60 or 119.23.

14(2) The amount of the reimbursement under sub. (1) is the actual cost of
15instruction for each pupil who completes the driver education course.
