2021 Senate Joint Resolution 74
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: observing November 11, 2021, as Veterans Day and honoring all veterans who have served our state and country.
Whereas, Veterans Day is a federally recognized holiday observed on November 11, 2021, that pays tribute to all American veterans who have honorably served our country; and
Whereas, Veterans Day is observed every year on November 11 in remembrance of the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918 when World War I came to an end; and
Whereas, Veterans Day was originally established as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, to commemorate the first anniversary of the end of World War I; and
Whereas, Congress passed a resolution in 1926, stating that the anniversary of Armistice Day on November 11 “should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations”; and
Whereas, Congress established Armistice Day as a national holiday in 1938 and in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day in recognition of all veterans who have served in all wars; and
Whereas, Veterans Day commemorates all veterans, living or dead, who have served the United States in times of war and in peace; and
Whereas, there are over 18 million living veterans in the United States today who have served in at least one war, including 325,000 veterans who served in World War II; and
Whereas, there are estimated to be over 371,000 veterans living in Wisconsin today; and
Whereas, over 41 million Americans have served and fought for our country since its founding, including more than 16 million Americans who served in World War II, the largest mobilization of the U.S. military in our nation's history; and
Whereas, we honor all of those individuals who have bravely and honorably served our country today and throughout our nation's history for their sacrifices and dedication to protecting and serving our great nation; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin Legislature recognize November 11, 2021, as Veterans Day and pay tribute to the millions of veterans who have honorably and bravely served the United States over the course of our nation's history.
