ASSEMBLY SUBSTITUTE AMENDMENT 1,
TO ASSEMBLY BILL 203

AB203-ASA1,1,3 1An Act to amend 343.14 (2) (j); and to create 343.01 (2) (j) of the statutes;
2relating to: indication of veteran status on an operator's license or
3identification card.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB203-ASA1,1 4Section 1 . 343.01 (2) (j) of the statutes is created to read:
AB203-ASA1,1,95 343.01 (2) (j) “Veteran," for purposes of ss. 343.14 and 343.17 only, means a
6former member of the U.S. armed forces who received a discharge under honorable
7conditions or, if the person qualifies for a loan from the U.S. department of veterans
8affairs under 38 CFR part 36, a former member of a reserve unit of the U.S. armed
9forces or the national guard who received a discharge under honorable conditions.
AB203-ASA1,2 10Section 2 . 343.14 (2) (j) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB203-ASA1,2,811 343.14 (2) (j) A statement as to whether the applicant is a veteran, as defined
12in s. 45.01 (12),
and, if so, whether the applicant wishes to have his or her veteran

1status indicated on the license or identification card. If the applicant has indicated
2that he or she is a veteran and wishes to have his or her veteran status indicated on
3the license or identification card, the applicant shall provide verification from the
4department of veterans affairs or a county veterans service officer that the applicant
5is a veteran or verification of service in a reserve unit of the U.S. armed forces or the
6national guard. An applicant with former service in a reserve unit of the U.S. armed
7forces or the national guard shall also provide a certificate of eligibility for a loan
8under 38 CFR part 36 from the U.S. department of veterans affairs
.
AB203-ASA1,3 9Section 3 . Initial applicability.
AB203-ASA1,2,1110 (1) This act first applies to applications that are received by the department of
11transportation on the effective date of this subsection.
