TO SENATE BILL 592

SB592-SSA2,1,2 1An Act to create 302.389 of the statutes; relating to: providing medication and
2a valid prescription to a prisoner upon release.

Under this bill, the Department of Corrections must identify whether any
individual who is about to be released from prison is currently taking a prescription
medication. If an individual is taking a prescription medication, DOC must provide
to the individual at the time of his or her release a four-week or 30-day supply of the
medication and a valid prescription to obtain eight weeks or 60 days worth of
medication to be filled at a later date, provided the department prescriber
determines that the medications and quantities are clinically appropriate.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB592-SSA2,1 3Section 1 . 302.389 of the statutes is created to read:
SB592-SSA2,2,7 4302.389 Medication and prescription provided upon release. Before an
5individual is released from confinement in prison upon completion of his or her

1sentence or to parole or extended supervision, the department shall determine if the
2individual is currently taking a prescription medication. If the individual is taking
3a prescription medication, the department shall provide to the individual at the time
4of his or her release a 4-week or 30-day supply of the medication and a valid
5prescription to obtain 8 weeks or 60 days worth of medication to be filled at a later
6date, provided that a department prescriber determines that the medications and
7quantities are clinically appropriate.
