SJR51,1,1 1Relating to: recognizing June 2023 as LGBTQ Pride Month.
SJR51,1,32 Whereas, Wisconsin has a committed history of being at the forefront of
3supporting equality for all its citizens; and
SJR51,1,74 Whereas, in February 1982, Wisconsin made history when Governor Lee
5Sherman Dreyfus signed the nation's first state law protecting lesbians and gay
6people from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations;
7and
SJR51,1,108 Whereas, in the intervening years, tremendous advancements have been made
9with respect to equitable treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer
10or questioning (LGBTQ) people both in Wisconsin and throughout the nation; and
SJR51,1,1211 Whereas, Wisconsin elected the first openly LGBTQ member of the U.S.
12Senate, and the Wisconsin state legislature has six openly LGBTQ members; and
SJR51,1,1513 Whereas, in June 2014, same-sex couples were legally able to marry in
14Wisconsin, and the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the equal right to marriage for
15same-sex couples in all 50 states in June 2015; and

1Whereas, despite these advances, LGBTQ people continue to face
2discrimination, and LGBTQ youth continue to be at increased risk for bullying,
3substance abuse, depression, homelessness, and suicide; and
SJR51,2,54 Whereas, June has become a symbolic month in which LGBTQ people and their
5allies have come together in various celebrations of pride; and
SJR51,2,76 Whereas, recognizing Pride Month will help foster an atmosphere of inclusion,
7acceptance, and celebration to the community; and
SJR51,2,128 Whereas, LGBTQ individuals, along with their families, friends, and
9neighbors, will be honoring Pride Month in their communities across the state,
10including Appleton, Door County, Eau Claire, Hudson, Janesville, La Crosse,
11Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Racine, Sheboygan, Stevens Point, Stoughton,
12Viroqua, and Wausau, to name only a few; and
SJR51,2,1513 Whereas, the month-long celebration is an opportunity for all people in the
14state to affirm their commitment to mutual respect and understanding; now,
15therefore, be it
SJR51,2,17 16Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
17legislature recognizes June 2023 as LGBTQ Pride Month.
