SJR50,1,2 Relating to: proclaiming June 2, 2023, as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Wisconsin.

SJR50,1,7 Whereas, the U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that the right to bear arms under the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is not unlimited and allows for reasonable restrictions on firearms, including who can have firearms and under what conditions, where firearms can be carried, and what types of firearms are permissible; and

SJR50,1,9 Whereas, firearms have become the number one cause of death for children in the United States and Wisconsin; and

SJR50,1,11 Whereas, on average, every day in the United States approximately 316 people are injured or killed with guns in murders, assaults, suicides, and accidents; and

SJR50,1,14 Whereas, in Wisconsin, approximately 600 men, women, and children are killed with guns each year, and 70 percent of whom die as a result of suicide by firearm; and

SJR50,1,15 Whereas, in Wisconsin, over 1,000 people are wounded each year by guns; and

SJR50,2,2 Whereas, gun deaths devastate families in urban, rural, and suburban areas; and

SJR50,2,5 Whereas, while Wisconsin's urban areas are disproportionately affected by gun homicide, the state's less populated areas experience greater rates of gun suicide; and

SJR50,2,7 Whereas, gun violence costs our country $557.2 billion in combined direct and indirect expenses annually; and

SJR50,2,9 Whereas, studies show that gun safety laws save lives and are associated with lower firearm death rates; and

SJR50,2,11 Whereas, Wisconsin has a long tradition of responsible gun ownership, safe gun usage, and training to hunt with firearms; now, therefore, be it

SJR50,2,13 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature hereby proclaims June 2, 2023, as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
