SJR50,1,73 Whereas, the U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that the right to bear arms
4under the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is not unlimited and allows
5for reasonable restrictions on firearms, including who can have firearms and under
6what conditions, where firearms can be carried, and what types of firearms are
7permissible; and
SJR50,1,98 Whereas, firearms have become the number one cause of death for children in
9the United States and Wisconsin; and
SJR50,1,1110 Whereas, on average, every day in the United States approximately 316 people
11are injured or killed with guns in murders, assaults, suicides, and accidents; and
SJR50,1,1412 Whereas, in Wisconsin, approximately 600 men, women, and children are
13killed with guns each year, and 70 percent of whom die as a result of suicide by
14firearm; and

1Whereas, gun deaths devastate families in urban, rural, and suburban areas;

SJR50,2,53 Whereas, while Wisconsin's urban areas are disproportionately affected by gun
4homicide, the state's less populated areas experience greater rates of gun suicide;

SJR50,2,76 Whereas, gun violence costs our country $557.2 billion in combined direct and
7indirect expenses annually; and
SJR50,2,98 Whereas, studies show that gun safety laws save lives and are associated with
9lower firearm death rates; and
SJR50,2,1110 Whereas, Wisconsin has a long tradition of responsible gun ownership, safe gun
11usage, and training to hunt with firearms; now, therefore, be it
SJR50,2,13 12Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature
13hereby proclaims June 2, 2023, as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
