AJR51,1,1 1Relating to: recognizing October 26, 2023, as Intersex Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
AJR51,1,42 Whereas, Intersex Awareness Day is recognized on October 26 in honor of the
3first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States at the annual
4conference of the American Academy of Pediatrics on October 26, 1996; and
AJR51,1,75 Whereas, “intersex” refers to individuals born with variations in their physical
6or biological sex characteristics, including genital anatomy, reproductive organs,
7hormonal variations, or chromosomal patterns; and
AJR51,1,108 Whereas, since the first Intersex Awareness Day in 1996, it has become a day
9during which intersex people and allies come together to celebrate and uplift the
10intersex community; and
AJR51,1,1111 Whereas, approximately 1.7 percent of people are born with intersex traits; and
AJR51,1,1312 Whereas, intersex people are often stigmatized and subjected to
13discrimination; and
AJR51,2,214 Whereas, intersex babies and children are often subject to unnecessary and
15involuntary surgeries at a young age to make their bodies conform to traditional

1notions of what it means to be male or female, although these interventions may
2result in lasting physical and mental harm; and
AJR51,2,53 Whereas, medical practices should respect the human rights and bodily
4autonomy of all people, and government institutions should implement policies that
5protect and support intersex people; and
AJR51,2,76 Whereas, people born with intersex traits are an important part of the diversity
7of our state and should be afforded equal dignity and respect; now, therefore, be it
AJR51,2,10 8Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
9Legislature does hereby recognize October 26, 2023, to be Intersex Awareness Day
10in Wisconsin.
