AJR122,1,52 Whereas, epilepsy is a neurological disorder producing brief disturbances in the
3normal electrical functions of the brain that temporarily affects a person's
4consciousness, bodily movements, or sensations, while creating long-term effects on
5the lifestyle of individuals with epilepsy; and
AJR122,1,76 Whereas, one in 26 people will develop epilepsy and one in 10 people will have
7a seizure during his or her lifetime; and
AJR122,1,98 Whereas, epilepsy can affect anyone regardless of gender, race, age, religion,
9educational background, or socioeconomic status; and
AJR122,1,1110 Whereas, epilepsy affects more than 50 million people worldwide, nearly 3
11million Americans, and about 60,000 Wisconsinites; and
AJR122,1,1512 Whereas, although there is no known cure for epilepsy, existing drug therapy,
13surgery, and other non-pharmacological treatments enable up to 70 percent of
14individuals with epilepsy to lead normal lives with no seizures or with a significant
15reduction in seizures; and

1Whereas, epilepsy is a complex disorder that requires further research to find
2a cure, additional treatment options, and prevention; and
AJR122,2,43 Whereas, epilepsy and seizure disorders limit options for convenient,
4affordable, and accessible transportation; and
AJR122,2,65 Whereas, the public is often unable to recognize common seizure types or to
6respond with appropriate first aid; and
AJR122,2,107 Whereas, the annual observance of Purple Day on March 26 advocates for the
8rights, humane treatment, stigma reduction, and appropriate education of all
9persons with epilepsy, while raising awareness in families, professionals, and the
10general public to better understand this lifelong disorder; now, therefore, be it
AJR122,2,16 11Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature
12proclaims March 26, 2024, as Purple Day, invites all Wisconsinites to participate by
13wearing purple, and calls upon all citizens, government agencies, public and private
14institutions, businesses, and schools to recommit their communities to increasing
15awareness and understanding of epilepsy through education while ensuring that all
16individuals with epilepsy lead a full and productive life; and, be it further
AJR122,2,18 17Resolved, That the chief clerk of the assembly shall provide copies of this
18resolution to the Epilepsy Foundation of Wisconsin.
