AB597,1,3 1An Act to create 6.876 of the statutes; relating to: establishing a plan to
2register qualified electors who are detained in jail and to allow the electors to
3vote while detained.

This bill requires that the sheriff of each county in this state establish a plan
to allow qualified voters who are detained in jail or a county house of correction to
register to vote and to vote at an election by absentee ballot. The bill requires the
sheriff to establish the plan with assistance from the municipal clerk of the
municipality where the jail or house of correction is located.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB597,1 4Section 1. 6.876 of the statutes is created to read:
AB597,2,4 56.876 Registration and absentee voting while detained. The sheriff of
6each county in this state shall establish a plan to facilitate the ability of qualified
7electors who are detained in a jail, as defined in s. 302.30, or a county house of
8correction to register to vote and to vote at an election by absentee ballot. The sheriff

1shall establish the plan with assistance from the municipal clerk of the municipality
2where the jail or house of correction is located. The sheriff shall file the plan with
3the municipal clerk and the elections commission in a manner determined by the
4clerk and the commission.
