AB51-ASA1,1,2 1An Act to amend 66.0501 (1) of the statutes; relating to: eligibility for
2appointment as a law enforcement officer.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, no person may be appointed as a deputy sheriff of any
county or police officer of any city, village, or town unless that person is a citizen of
the United States. This bill provides that no person may be appointed to one of these
positions unless that person is legally eligible to work in the United States and, if the
person is not a citizen of the United States, has been a legal resident of the United
States for the five consecutive years preceding appointment.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB51-ASA1,1 3Section 1. 66.0501 (1) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB51-ASA1,2,34 66.0501 (1) Deputy sheriffs and municipal police. No person may be
5appointed deputy sheriff of any county or police officer for any city, village, or town
6unless that person is a citizen of legally eligible to work in the United States and, if

1the person is not a citizen of the United States, has been a legal resident of the United
2States for the 5 consecutive years preceding appointment
. This section does not
3apply to common carriers or to a deputy sheriff not required to take an oath of office.
