SJR56,1,42 Whereas, the history of the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) dates back to
31893, with the founding of the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons, and,
4later that decade, the Milwaukee Medical College; and
SJR56,1,95 Whereas, the Milwaukee Medical College joined with Marquette University in
61907, merged with the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons to officially
7become the Marquette University School of Medicine in 1913, separated from
8Marquette University in 1967, and was eventually renamed the Medical College of
9Wisconsin in 1970; and
SJR56,1,1210 Whereas, MCW's current culture reflects the words spoken by Dr. John
11Bowman during the school's first capital campaign, “The people want the very best
12and will have nothing second rate”; and
SJR56,1,1513 Whereas, MCW has met this charge, providing world-class medical education,
14patient care, biomedical research, and community engagement to improve the health
15of the communities it serves; and
1Whereas, in order to help address physician shortages in medically
2underserved regions of the state, and in the spirit of excellence and deep commitment
3to training Wisconsin's next generation of physicians, MCW embarked upon the
4creation of two new medical education programs, the first being MCW-Green Bay
5in northeast Wisconsin, followed by MCW-Central Wisconsin; and
SJR56,2,96 Whereas, building upon decades of strong partnership and collaboration, the
7State of Wisconsin partnered with MCW in the 2013-2015 biennial budget to provide
8MCW with nearly $7.4 million in State Building Commission funding for the
9development of these new medical schools; and
SJR56,2,1210 Whereas, MCW-Central Wisconsin is designed to recruit and integrate medical
11students into the very fabric of the communities they will eventually serve as
12tomorrow's physicians; and
SJR56,2,1413 Whereas, MCW-Central Wisconsin officially opened with its inaugural class of
14medical students in July 2016; and
SJR56,2,1915 Whereas, numerous academic and health system partners in the central
16Wisconsin region have all come together with MCW to create a truly unique and
17community-based medical education for the inaugural class of MCW-Central
18Wisconsin medical students, as well as generations of students and physicians yet
19to come; now, therefore, be it
