1An Act to amend
36.09 (3) (a); and to create
36.11 (7m) of the statutes; relating
2to: requiring University of Wisconsin System schools to offer degree credit
3internships for each academic major.

Under this bill, for each academic major offered at a University of Wisconsin
System school, the school must offer a degree credit internship for which at least
three credits toward completion of the academic major are awarded upon successful
completion of the internship.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
36.09 (3) (a) of the statutes is amended to read:
(a) The chancellors shall be the executive heads of their respective 6
faculties and institutions and shall be vested with the responsibility of 7
administering board policies under the coordinating direction of the president and
be accountable and report to the president and the board on the operation and 2
administration of their institutions. Subject to board policy and s. 36.11 (7m),
chancellors of the institutions in consultation with their faculties shall be 4
responsible for designing curricula and setting degree requirements; determining 5
academic standards and establishing grading systems; defining and administering 6
institutional standards for faculty peer evaluation and screening candidates for 7
appointment, promotion and tenure; recommending individual merit increases; 8
administering associated auxiliary services; and administering all funds, from 9
whatever source, allocated, generated or intended for use of their institutions.
36.11 (7m) of the statutes is created to read:
36.11 (7m) Degree credit internships.
The board shall ensure that, for each 12
academic major offered at an institution, the institution offers a degree credit course 13
that is an internship for which at least 3 credits toward completion of the academic 14
major are awarded upon successful completion of the course.
(1) This act first applies to the 2018-19 academic year.
