1An Act to amend
174.055 of the statutes; relating to: exemptions from dog

Under this bill, an owner of a dog is not required to pay an annual dog license
fee if the dog is trained to provide specific physical or therapeutic functions under the
control of a handler or if a medical professional has determined that the dog provides
a benefit to a person with a disability. Under current law, only dogs that are trained
to lead blind or deaf persons or to provide support for mobility-impaired persons are
exempt from annual dog license fees.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
174.055 of the statutes is amended to read:
4174.055 Exemption of assistance dogs for blind, deaf and
that has been
specially trained to lead blind or deaf
6persons or, guide, or assist a person whose vision or hearing is impaired,
support for mobility-impaired persons
a person whose mobility is impaired, or to
2provide specific physical or therapeutic functions under the direction and control of
3a qualified handler, and every dog that a medical professional has determined
4provides a benefit to a person with a disability,
is exempt from the dog license tax and 5
every person owning such a dog shall receive annually a free dog license from the 6
local collecting officer upon application.
